DSPT – Integrating Philosophy and Theology to Engage the Culture for the Common Good

The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) in Berkeley, CA, is a community of scholars committed to every genuine human question and to the truth wherever it may be found. We study philosophy and theology for their own sake, recognizing the integrity of each discipline while remaining careful to the significant relationship between them.

Engaging contemporary scholarship and culture for the sake of the common good is at the heart of our mission. In the words of DSPT President, Fr. Michael Sweeney OP, "We have a particular responsibility to the heritage of St. Thomas Aquinas that requires us, by his example, to be steeped in the tradition we have received while being hospitable to new ways of understanding the world around us."

Located in Berkeley, California, DSPT is a member of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU), the largest partnership of seminaries and graduate schools in the United States, boasting 9 member schools and 11 additional institutes and centers. Through the GTU, DSPT is also affiliated with UC Berkeley, one of the world's most distinguished universities.

DSPT offers MA Theology, MA Philosophy, Mater of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies degrees along with non-degree options: Certificate of Theological Studies and Special Student status. The signature offering at DSPT is the Concurrent MA Program, where students can earn two degrees – MA Philosophy and MA Theology – in three years. Students can choose different concentrations, including Thomistic Studies, Religion and the Arts, and Catholic Social Teaching.
