El Colegio de México is a public institution dedicated to superior research and teaching. It was founded on October 8, 1940, by the Mexican federal government, the Bank of Mexico, UNAM (translated: the National Autonomous University of Mexico), and the Fondo de Cultura Económica (a major publishing house), with the following goals: to organize and accomplish research in fields of the social sciences and the humanities;  to impart superior education in order to form professionals, researchers, and university professors; to edit books and journals about matters related to its activities; and to collaborate with other institutions (national and foreign) for the accomplishment of common objectives.
